We chatted to Mpilo to find out more about her journey as a woman in the Health and Safety Industry. Here is what she had to say:
1. What role do you play within the Health and Safety industry?
I am the Production Co-ordinator at Dromex Globale. I am responsible for planning every production order, ensuring that it is manufactured on the correct line and delivered timeously. It is my duty to ensure that every supervisor/department is aware of the new orders or changes to them, so that they can secure the correct fabrics and trims to manufacture the garments.
2. What does it mean for you as a woman to be in the Health and Safety Industry?
As a woman in this industry, I get to inspire women every day by showing them that they can do anything and do not have to limit themselves or feel undermined in an industry that is predominately male dominated.
3. How do you balance the pressures of work and family?
I separate work and family to the best of my ability, so that I can give my best in both spaces.
4. What do you find to be the most challenging for women within the industry?
I work in an industry that is male dominated but I know women have the ability/capabilities to do the job just as well as a man. Another challenge as a female within the industry, is to be treated equally amongst my male colleagues and be given the respect deserved as a woman.
5. What is your favourite part of the job?
Ensuring that all the garments manufactured at Dromex Globale are of the highest quality, and, the joy I get from interacting with my colleagues and assisting them to the best of my ability.
6. What is your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement was moving from a Planning Supervisor to a Production Co-Ordinator. This achievement has broadened my scope of work and has motivated me to study further within this field.
7. Who is the most influential woman you know and how does she inspire you?
Connie Fergurson inspires me because she is a great role model. She is a hardworking and a successful businesswoman while at the same time still being a humble person. I would like to model her business mindset and leadership style.
8. What can you do to empower women within the Health and Safety Industry?
I am passionate about encouraging women to believe that they can achieve anything, even in a male dominated industry. Women are a powerhouse and should not limit themselves.
9. What is one quote that inspires you?
“Life isn’t about finding yourself it is about creating yourself”.
