We chatted to Carina to find out more about her journey as a woman in the Health and Safety Industry. Here is what she had to say:
1. What role do you play within the Health and Safety Industry?
I am the Safety & Environmental Manager for Impala Platinum Ltd at the Refineries operation in Springs. I am responsible for managing and maintaining the safety and environmental systems on site which includes legal compliance. I am also the chairperson of the Refineries PPE committee that reviews, tests, and approves PPE for use on site.
2. What does it mean for you as a woman to be in the Health and Safety Industry?
It is a privilege to share this work environment with other females as well as my male colleagues. The learning opportunities are plenty and one needs to be open to learn and to ask questions. As a woman it feels good to be part of this challenging but also rewarding industry, to see people go home to their families after a day at work without being injured.
3. How do you balance the pressures of work and family?
It is difficult to switch off from work problems when at home and I need to make a conscious decision to not be distracted at home. I spend time with family and friends and make time for myself to relax with music or working in the garden.
4. What do you find to be the most challenging for women within the industry?
To be respected as a Safety professional regardless of one’s gender. It is still thought that females are not good with the technical component of safety and that we are better with the system side.
5. What is your favourite part of the job?
Working with a diverse group of people from different backgrounds and learning from them daily. It is also interesting to learn how people view and understand certain safety related concepts.
6. What is your greatest achievement?
Under my leadership we implemented ISO 45001 at the Refineries and received our certification in 2020. The PPE Committee was also my brainchild as this improved communication between suppliers, our Procurement Department, and the Safety team.
7. Who is the most influential woman you know and how does she inspire you?
This might sound like a cliché, but my mother is my influence. She is a very strong woman and through tough times she always made a plan, she was very resourceful and taught me to think outside of the box and to look for solutions instead of just complaining about the problem.
8. What can you do to empower women within the Health and Safety Industry?
I am not afraid to share my knowledge and experience with young women entering the safety field. I also acknowledge their contribution and give praise and recognition where it is due. I provide a safe space for learning and set clear goals for their growth so that they eventually can stand on their own feet and make decisions.
9. What is one quote that inspires you?
Gratitude and attitude are not challenges; they are choices. (Robert Braathe)
